No fewer than four persons were allegedly shot dead yesterday in
Onitsha, Anambra State commercial centre, when members of the Movement
for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) clashed
with joint security team.
The movement, through its Director of Information, Comrade Uchenna
Madu, alleged that the recent killing of their members by joint patrol
teams was not unconnected to their earlier stand that MASSOB will not
support All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) ahead of Saturday’s
governorship election.
Madu said the incident happened in the early hours of yesterday, when
a joint team of army, police and men of the Department of State
Security Services (DSS) stormed MASSOB headquarters along Onitsha-Owerri
Road and allegedly opened fire on the members, which resulted in the
death of four persons, while several others sustained various degrees of
injuries.
He alleged that during the clash, over 87 persons were critically
injured and were denied medical attention because of lack of police
medical report.
According to him, about 18 vehicles belonging to MASSOB members and
traders at Mgbuka-Obosi, (Old Motor Spare Parts Obosi), 137 motorcycles
belonging to MASSOB members were burnt and the sum of N920,000 was
allegedly taken by the security agents.
He also alleged that the clampdown on their members was masterminded
by the Anambra State Government, because it was not comfortable in their
resolve to dump APGA and announce their preferred candidate ahead of
Saturday governorship election.
The MASSOB image maker also said 37 traders in the Old Motor Spare
Parts, Mgbuka, also sustained bullet wounds and were taken to various
hospitals for medical attention.
