Soldiers in Imo State on Saturday arrested no fewer than 220 members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), includ­ing leader of the group, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike.

The pro-Biafra activists were arrested by the soldiers at a check-point at Okigwe, Imo State, for allegedly put­ting on Biafran uniform.

According to reports, the acivitists were arrested on their way to Monobil Hotel Okigwe, where members of Okigwe Zonal Youth Conference had organized an honour award for Uwa­zuruike for his efforts to emancipate the Igbo.

It was gathered that the Uwazuruike was later released on the orders of Captain Ola, leader of the soldiers on his arrival aat the scene of the incident.

Abia State Bridge Collapses- Villagers Calls for Gov. Assistance

We have Lost Connecting Route to other Towns says The people of Ndi Ebe Abam as their Only Bridge Collapses.

The popular Igwu bridge linking Ndi Ebe Abam to other towns collapsed on Tuesday being July 1st when a 25 tons tipper carrying gravel plied on it. Fortunately no life was lost but now the villagers say they have been cut off from other towns as a result of the collapsed bridge which served as the only motor-able road through which the indigenes used to connect with other towns.

They sent this photo to the media asking that the Arochukwu L.G.A. Chairman and Abia State government should come to their aid, saying people residing in the town have been adversely affected by this mishap.

They are appealing to the authorities concerned to help them rebuild the bridge in a modern form that will last longer than the former one which was made with irons and planks and maintained by the indigenes for many years. They also implored the government to help them construct the road which has been neglected for years.

Magistrate Dies in Prison Custody at Enugu

A magistrate in Enugu State Judiciary, Mrs. Ifeoma Nneji reportedly died inside her cell in Enugu Prison Tuesday night for alleged complications arising from shock.

She was remanded in Enugu prison along with her husband on Monday after they were arraigned for “conspiracy, false information and attempted murder.”

The deceased magistrate, who served at Oji River Magisterial District before she was recently suspended by the State Judicial Service Commission on account of her involvement in the alleged abduction of a 9-year-old-girl, passed on Tuesday night.

Sources said that she became ill about 24 hours after she arrived the prison following her remand by an Enugu Magistrate Court for allegedly assaulting a female tenant residing in her husband’s house.

Mrs Nneji, her husband, Mr. Ifeanyi Nneji and another unnamed person living with them were said to have beaten and injured the tenant over an undisclosed squabble which resulted in the arraignment and remand of the couple.
Controller of Enugu Prison, Mr. Alloy Uchenna confirmed the death of the magistrate but said that the Deputy Controller in-charge of the prison was yet to brief him about what transpired.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said that Mrs Nneji and her husband were re-arraigned for another case of conspiracy, false information and attempted murder on Monday and were subsequently remanded in prison.

“They were remanded in Enugu prison custody where she died yesterday.  The matter for which they were charged commenced from Abakpa Division and was later transferred to State Criminal Investigations Department, CID from where they were arraigned on Monday  and the court remanded them in prison.  We heard the Magistrate died on Tuesday but the cause of her death is not yet known,” the state police spokesman said.
Mrs Nneji was on March 2, 2014 arrested by the police for allegedly abducting a 9-year-old child.

Nnamdi Kanu has shown his readiness to fight until the Republic is realised made this declaration on May 30 while speaking at the maiden commemoration of Biafran Day held at Ngwo, Enugu State.

He also regretted the non-payments of benefits due to Biafran soldiers saying ” It is a continuation of the same injustice that led them to try to extricate themselvesfrom this Luggard creation called Republic of Nigeria.The Yorubas, Hausa Fulani have been paid and then those of them belonging to Biafra have notbeen paid. It is an injustice thatmust be addressed and that is part of the reason why we are doing what we are doing because in the new Biafra we would not have this level of injustice”

Kanu while warning that the indigenous people of Biafra would commence what they called a new wave of freedom, fighting to carve a seperate state of Biafra from the present Nigeria said “We come in peace but we bring hell with us. If there is no Biafra this palce will be completely destroyed. Everything will die or they give us Biafra. So there is and will be no compromise. We won’t retreat and we wont’t surrende. We have come here to fight for our country or we die fighting for our freedom”.

Crime: Suspected Anambra kidnap gang leader Okechukwu Nnaegbo arrested

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano’s determination to rid the state of criminals has yielded result, as a suspected kidnap gang leader, Okechukwu Nnaegbo, has been nabbed aboard a South African Airways flight at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
Nnaegbo, who has confessed to being the shadowy figure behind the recent high-profile kidnap cases in the state, was on his way to South Africa to evade the onslaught against criminals, when a team of detectives from the Special Anti-robbery Squad in Anambra, in collaboration with their Lagos State counterparts, pounced on him inside the aircraft.

Nnaegbo, who hails from Nri in Anaocha Local Government, is believed to be the leader of a gang of armed robbers and kidnappers, who made life miserable for Ndi Anambra until the recent launch of “Operation Kpochapu”, a special anti-crime task force, by the Obiano administration.
Commissioner of Police Usman A. Gwary said the suspect was aboard the Johannesburg-bound plane when he was arrested by his men with the assistance of airport security operatives.

Nnaegbo’s arrest climaxed a week of successful counter-offensive against kidnappers in Anambra, which saw members of the “Operation Kpochapu” demolishing two buildings that belonged to suspected kidnappers.
One of the buildings belonged to Nonso Mgbe, a 25-year-old suspected kidnapper from Azia village in Ihiala Local Government, who is believed to have been responsible for the death of a former commander of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) of the state police command. He was also said to have been responsible for other high-profile kidnap cases.
As Mgbe’s storey building was being demolished, villagers shook their heads.
A nine-bedroom bungalow belonging to another suspected kidnapper, Okechukwu Amasiatu of Ezinifite in Nnewi South Local Government, was also demolished by  “Operation Kpochapu”.

He was suspected to have been behind the kidnap of highly-placed indigenes. He was also reported to have been the mastermind of the killing of five policemen at Emeka Offor junction in Oraifite, Nnewi.
Sources at Ezinifite said Amasiatu lived in Lagos but chose his village and the neighbouring towns and villages as targets to carry out his criminal activities. They said his elder brother, Chimaobi, was shot by the police in a shoot-out, following a tip-off on the activities of his gang.
Obiano said his administration was determined to rescue Anambra from criminals.
The governor used the opportunity to reiterate his administration’s effort to discourage youths from committing crimes, saying a comprehensive databank was being compiled to give them jobs.
He advised youths to participate in the exercise organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

MASSOB Orders Ndigbo To Return Home

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, on Monday, called on Ndigbos residing in the North eastern part of the country to come home following the incessant Boko Haram attacks in that region.

The call which was made in Onitsha, Anambra State, by Engr. Osondu Okwaraeke, the group’s National Red Cross Chairman was aimed at averting any lost of lives of Ndigbo. He stressed that those who choose to remain in the region is doing so at their own risk, noting that this is the second time such call is being made.
He recalled that before some Ndigbos became victims of previous attacks, MASSOB leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, told Indigenes living in troubled states to return home, adding that he even went ahead to send vehicles and other logistics to Alleviate their relocation.

According to him, Uwazuruike sent about 200 luxury buses to Ndigbos in the north to convey them back following the killings of innocent people by Boko Haram, but unfortunately most of them stayed while some of them who returned, later went back to the north because they thought the war had ended.
Okwaraeke while urging Ndigbo to adhere to the call, said: “so, no sympathy for victims of Boko Haram because a stitch in time saves nine”.

The national red cross chairman, who applauded Uwazuruike for his help described him as a true Igbo leader. He revealed that Uwazuruike also gave relief materials like food items, drugs, shelter, water and security to 2012 flood victims at Aguleri.
Okwaraeke, however, pleaded with the United Nations, Catholic Pontiff, Israel as well as other world leaders to help emancipate MASSOB and also assist them in actualising Biafra Republic, while Chief Emma Dinyelu, the group’s Director of Sanitation in Ekwusigo Region urged members to clean their regions on 29 May 2014, (Biafra Heroes’) Day celebrations slated for May 30, 2014.
According to Dinyelu, “Biafra is a clean nation and as such should be kept clean always”.

Jos Igbo Community Confirms Death of 32 and 42 Injuries Involved in Twin Blast.

The Igbo community in Jos, Plateau State, has confirmed that 36 Igbo men and women residing in Jos were killed in the twin bomb blast that rocked the city on Tuesday May 20th, with 42 others  injured and many others still missing.

The Eze Igbo II of Jos  Prof. Joseph Obilom stated this today Monday May 26th while addressing newsmen at his Palace in Jos.  

“Our people were worst hit by the blast. Most of our members are traders, who own shops at the terminus market. Goods worth millions of Naira of our members were destroyed. We are calling on the Federal and State government to come to our aid by sending relief materials to the injured and affected members.” he said.

Anambra: Group seeks to end Crisis

Anambra Youth Solidarity Movement has charged contending parties in the protracted crises rocking the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to sheath their swords. It charged party chieftains to obey court judgement, as a way forward in charting a new course for the party.

According to the coordinator of the movement, John Maduekwe, continued survival of the party was more important than personal interests of the party, saying that who loves the party should not resort to illegal means to achieve selfish interests but should make necessary sacrifices for the party to thrive.

While commenting on the victory of APGA in the recent Anambra election, Maduekwe said: “APGA’s recent landslide victory in Anambra State that translated in the inauguration of Chief Willie Obiano, as the Governor of Anambra State, was essentially made possible through the super sterling and glaring performance of Mr. Peter Obi. Evidently, throughout the electioneering campaigns it was the face of Obi that was affecting and attracting the electorate.”

In the light of these developments, the group said party members should obey court orders in resolving all disputes instead of attacking judicial officers on the pages of newspapers for dutifully discharging their duties, adding that the National Judicial Council (NJC) had the onerous responsibility to reprimand or sanction erring judges and not a litigant in a dispute.

Maduekwe commended Mr. Obi for remaining in APGA despite every calculation by political pundits, who had predicted his decampment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Rather, Peter Obi has continually taken APGA from strength to strength as evidenced by the recent landslide victory of the party in the gubernatorial contest in Anambra State’ he said. “On the part of Chief Nwobu Alor, he is still agile, vibrant and cherished by his numerous supporters, as a matter of fact he still calls the shot from his office and adds premium and power to the APGA government of the day.”

He also commended Governor Obiano, saying it was also evident that judging with Chief Obiano’s actions so far, Anambra State was poised to further boost its lost glory that Obi had reclaimed from those who cared less about the people’s well being.

North East Senators approve emergency rule extension

Senators from the North East on Tuesday acceded to President Goodluck Jonathan’s request for extension of emergency rule in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe but said it was with “a heavy heart”.

The senators said their agreeing to the extension was on the basis that certain conditions articulated by them must be considered.

Some of the conditions include a monthly briefing of the senate by service chiefs, proper arming of soldiers and that a supplementary budget be submitted to meet financial requirements to combat insurgency among others.

Speaking to newsmen, Sen. Ma’aji Lawan ( APC-Borno) said the senators from the affected states approved the extension “with a lot of grief. We from the affected states welcome this resolution but with a very heart.

“We have been killed, ravaged, and are going through pain and anguish and criminality that has never been imagined anywhere. We know that it is difficult to ask an army to go and fight a war without giving them the tools. They asked us and now we have given them the tools to go and work.

“We want the president also to know that our people in the affected states are going through pain and that he should respect every single one of that resolution to protect the lives of our people and turn things around.”

Lawan said that the envisaged Marshall  plan and envisaged immediate intervention fund were  the minimum immediate measures that the states were waiting to see implemented.

“We want the military up and doing  a lot more than they are for which we ask the president to give us a supplementary budget so that we will provide the funds for whatever is needed for them to prosecute that war.”

According to him, “this madness has come full circle and must be stopped.”

Also speaking to newsmen, Sen. Ahmed Lawan (APC-Yobe) lamented that  Yobe state government had so far spent over N9 billion on the armed forces.

He said that although the armed forces needed to be properly funded to effectively fight insurgency, it should be the responsibility of the federal government and not of the state government .

“Yobe has spent over N9 billion as at today on funding the operations of our armed forces and we believe that our armed forces need to be properly funded, motivated and properly kitted.

He said that the condition that the president should prepare and submit a supplementary budget would take care of the funding.

Lawan also said it would help to create economic benefits to the youths who were the recruit base for Boko Haram.

“We thank God for giving us the courage and wisdom to negotiate the passage of the request of the president to extend the emergency rule. I want to say that it was a product of over four hours of discussion with the senate president and senators from the affected states and we agreed on certain conditions.”

He also expressed optimism that the president, having gotten the extension he sought, would also implement the conditions attached to it to the letter.

“We expect the president to react positively. Now that he has gotten what he wanted even though not exactly the way he wanted it but that is politics, that is life.

“I trust that the president will implement in total what we have passed in the senate even though we have to go through harmonization with the House of Representatives. What we passed is a product of strong and prolonged negotiation and I want to thank our colleagues for standing with us and we think these conditions will bring some succor to our people.

The lawmaker added that with constant briefing from the service chiefs, the senate would ascertain if the extension was working and if not, it would immediately call for its revocation.

“One of our other conditions is having to review the implementation of the state of emergency on a monthly basis and if we are satisfied in the first two or three months we could say it is okay. If, however, it is not implemented properly, we could call for revocation that is to stop the implementation of the state of emergency.

Sen. Bello Tukur ( PDP-Adamawa) also told newsmen that he was hopeful that with the extension approved, the federal government would bring the war to an end. ”Giving the fact that we have all tried to meet their expectation,  we hope that they will do all that it takes for them to finish this once and for all.

“I believe the information that we got from the security services is genuine and we hope it will facilitate the conclusion of the war.”

The senators had earlier unanimously voted in favour of  extending the emergency rule in plenary after extensive consultation and discussions  which lasted for over four hours.

Anambra: Gov. Wille Obiano directs immediate overhaul of 30 general hospitals

Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has directed immediate revamping and equipment of 30 general hospitals in the state with facilities to make them more effective.

The directive was given at the flag-off of the May 2014 Maternal, New born and Child Health Week, MNCHW, for children aged six to 59 months at Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area.Giving the directive to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Josephat Akabuike, weekend, the governor said the aim was to ensure that they provided medicare comparable to the levels currently available in mission hospitals across the state.

Governor Obiano pledged to ensure the extension of health services to all nooks and crannies of Anambra State to reach the poor, vulnerable and down-trodden in furtherance of the administration’s policy thrust on health.

Obiano said: “My administration has shown commitment and the greatest support for primary health care and disease control.

“We have instituted preventive and control measures against the outbreak of diseases like Lassa fever, Cerebral Meningitis, cholera, diarrhea, among others.

“Support for immunisation will be sustained, and we will ensure that the gains made in the area of public health and immunisation will be sustained and surpassed. Already 15 per cent of the general hospitals are provided with free and safe pre-natal and post-natal services.”

Governor Obiano observed that the interventions had over the past six years, reached over one million children and 300,000 pregnant women, with antigens and intervention.

Also various pluses, sops, albendazoles tablets iron foliate tablets, biscuits, cups, bowls, were given to children and mothers as motivation; over 60,000 tablets of soaps, 500,000 tablets of albendazol, 500,0000 tablets of iron foliate and 100,0000 packets of biscuits were distributed during each programme.

He confirmed that the state government had participated in all national programmes, including advocacy campaigns in the last six years, including immunisation plus days, integrated measles campaigns, state immunisation plus days, local immunisation plus days, maternal new born and child health weeks, as well as Governor’s Forum One day quarterly Polio Eradication Campaign.

Expressing gratitude to the government’s partners, including UNICEF, World Bank, World Health Organisation, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, media and other line ministries, the governor said the use of MNCHW as a periodic preventive routine outreach mechanism, had shown internationally to improve immunisation coverage and other services.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Josephat Akabuike, said Governor Obiano’s intervention in the area of health was working, stressing that the state was moving towards the direction of medical tourism to attract visitors on health ground and boost the state’s economy, given the prevailing sanity and adequate conducive security situation.

The Maternal and New Born Health Week is a programme aimed at addressing an integrated package of promotion and preventive services that is highly cost effective and result oriented.   A highlight of the event was the immunization of children in turn by the governor and his wife at the venue.

Nsukka union warns Ekweremadu on Enugu guber poll

Lagos State chapter of Nsukka Zonal Union, NZU, has cautioned the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, over plot to destabilise the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP, following the zoning of the governorship position to the Enugu North senatorial district by the party.

NZU stated that Ekweremadu had never hidden his hatred for Nsukka people, adding, however, that his ‘’evil machinations” against the collective will of the electorate in Enugu State will fail.
But Ekweremadu, in a swift reaction, dismissed the allegation, saying he had said repeatedly that he was not interested in the state’s governorship.

However, addressing a news conference in Ikeja, Lagos,  weekend, Chairman of NZU in the state, Chief Matthias Ezema, said the postulations by Ekweremadu’s foot soldiers that the state had always had four zones for political blocs, including Enugu, Nsukka, Agbaja and Nkanu, was untrue.

He said:  “For the avoidance of doubt, the old Enugu State had three senatorial zones, including Nsukka, Enugu and Abakaliki. Enugu then included Awgu, where Ekweremadu hails from. Before the old Enugu State, we had old Anambra State, which Chief Jim Nwobodo governed.

‘’It is ridiculous that the Deputy Senate President is now trying to destroy the party because of his vaulting ambition of either remaining perpetually in the Senate or becoming the governor.

But Ekweremadu dismissed the union’s claims, stressing that he was not interested in contesting the governorship election in 2015.

“On the issue of governorship, I think I have said this thing severally and I recall that in June, I made it clear that I am not interested in governorship and nothing has changed since then.
“I believe that all of us will work together to ensure that in 2015, we have a governor we will all be proud of,” he said.

Nigeria: GEJ cancels visit to Chibok

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has cancelled his first visit to the village from which more than 200 schoolgirls were abducted by Islamist rebel group Boko Haram a month ago due to security fears, senior government.

Jonathan will instead fly directly from the capital Abuja to Paris on Friday for a regional summit to discuss the Boko Haram insurgency and wider insecurity and will not now make a stop in the northeastern village of Chibok.

Jonathan asked France last week to arrange a security summit with neighbors Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin, and officials from the United States, Britain and the European Union to discuss a coordinated response. The summit will take place on Saturday.

Some Nigerians have criticized the government's initial response to the plight of the girls, who were abducted on April 14, and U.S. officials this week said the government had done too little to adapt to the threat posed by Boko Haram.

Ndigbo Lagos recently organised an award night and from all indications, it was a grand night that would not be easily forgotten by guests that graced the occasion. 

The event It tagged Meritorious Award And Grand Reception Night for The Igbos and it was meant to honour those of the Igbo extraction that have performed well in their choosen profession. 
The gala night took place at Oriental Hotel and Resort, Lekki.

Names of the abducted girls released by CAN saying that 90% of the Girls are Christians

CHRISTIAN Association of Nigeria, CAN, Sunday, released the names of the abducted female students in Chibok by the Book Haram Sect.

The National Christian Body, consequently, demanded N50m as damages as well as overseas scholarship, for each girl from the federal government.
A Statement signed by the President/Founder of Old Time Revival Hour, Kaduna & immediate-past chairman of Northern States Christian and Elders Forum (NOCSEF), an affiliate of CAN, Evangelist Matthew Owojaiye gave reason for the attack on Chibok girls’ high school.

“Chibok Local Government is 90% Christians. Majority of the girls abducted are Christian! Why did Boko Haram visit Chibok Local Government? Why didn’t they visit so many other Local Government Girls Secondary Schools in Borno State?”
While demanding for those girls in Senior Secondary School, SSS, one and two to be transfered to schools of their choice, CAN called on faithful across the country to pray for their release.

Boko Haram Demands 50m for each abducted girls. Will GEJ Negotiate?

The forum said that 180 of the girls abducted on April 14 are Christians.

The immediate past chairman of the Forum and President of Old Time Revival Hour based in  Kaduna, Rev. Mathew Owojaiye, said 90 per cent of the abducted girls are Christians and therefore questioned why the Boko Haram militants targeted only schools in Chibok Local Government, which  is predominantly a Christian community.

The forum however demanded a 50 million Naira compensation for each of the students.

The organisation said apart from the 50 million Naira damage as trauma compensation to each of the girls, the government must also take each of them to universities abroad on government scholarship by September 2014, while also demanding for the immediate transfer of SS1 and SS2 girls from schools in Chibok to schools of their choice, the cost of which must be borne by the government.

While enjoining Nigerians to pray and raise their voices to high heavens over the incident, the Northern Christian elders also called on the Federal Government to live up to its constitutional responsibilities of protecting the lives and properties of the citizenry.
